We’re starting a family, so here are three reasons my wife and I buy organic food, all quoted from Peter V. Fossel's, Organic farming: everything you need to know*

1. "Even more so than taste, health is the reason most often given by our customers for buying organically. They don't want to ingest through their food chemical herbicides, fungicides, or the 1.2 billion pounds of pesticides released legally in the United States every year."
2. "It's long been thought that pesticides don't cross the placenta to a fetus in the womb, but a 2005 study by the American Red Cross tested 21 common pesticides and found that all 21 made the crossover."
3. Pesticides in the womb double the risk of developing leukemia. Children eating organic produce have six times less organophosphates in their urine than children who eat conventional produce.

There are many other reasons to buy organic food, like saving the environment, and saving the family farm. But when you think of your own health, or that of a newborn baby, you suddenly refocus your thinking.

Whatever else organic food is supposed to be, it's about health. And paperwork does nothing for your health.

It's sad but true, restaurants are inspected with more zeal than organic farms. Honest farmers don't like that one bit.

Sure, conventional farming might have a pedigree of over 75 years. But organic agriculture has about 10,000 years, give or take. It got us this far; just imagine how much further it can take us.
